01 - Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/2-inch wedges for even cooking.
02 - Place prepared apple slices into the Instant Pot insert.
03 - Sprinkle brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt evenly over the apples.
04 - Drizzle with maple syrup or honey if desired, then pour in water or apple juice.
05 - Distribute butter pieces evenly across the top of the apples.
06 - Close lid and set valve to sealing. Cook on high pressure for 2 minutes.
07 - Allow natural pressure release for 3 minutes, then carefully quick-release remaining pressure.
08 - Open lid and stir in vanilla extract. For thicker syrup, use Sauté mode and simmer gently for a few minutes.
09 - Serve warm as a dessert, or use as topping for oatmeal, pancakes, or ice cream.
